Hilton Root

“Art is the order of all things. Confusion adds life to art.”

The preceding quote was from stream of consciousness writings by Hilton Root, a friend since the age of 13, when he was 16 years old. This quote has stayed in memory over the decades as I found it, ironically, confusing.

At this point, I read the quote as art (that which is art-ificial, manmade) is an expression of an artist’s particular view of the world. However, the artist’s view itself can be viewed differently by different minds. Especially, when an artwork is ambiguous (generally called abstract or surreal), it allows multiple readings, reflecting the nature of life itself.
